Water Filtration Plant
Water plant security is a serious issue.
After September 11 the department immediately took steps to reinforce security measures at the water plant. All gates and doors now remain locked at all times. Relocating the garage and office to a more remote location will eliminate non-essential traffic in and around the water plant, making it less vulnerable.
Testimony to the serious nature of the issue is a federal mandate that all utilities departments, supplying water to over 100,000 people, must undergo a USEPA vulnerability assessment study. With an $115,000 federal grant approved we selected Malcolm Pirnie to conduct the study. The Board of Municipal Utilities has reviewed the results and is continually taking the necessary steps to further improve plant security.
You can get involved by reporting suspicious activity around the water plant site to the Avon Lake Police Department at 440-933-4567. Should you have any other security concerns, call Avon Lake Municipal Utilities at 440-933-3229. Plant operators are on duty 24 hours a day.
